Marry YourSelf First Success Principle #12

Support Networks

Find and use your support networks and you’ll discover a huge boost in all areas of your life. You are not designed to be a total solitary being. You’re designed as a social being, and therefore you need to have social networks.

You need to have people to have fun with, you need to have people you can brain-storm with and you need to have people who will support you and even give you a little extra kick in the butt every once in a while.

There’s no need to try to navigate life by yourself. You need to have people to help get to wherever it is you ultimately want to be. There’s no point in trying to do it all by yourself. Do yourself a big favor and start now to develop a good, solid, healthy support system.

Now, the keyword in that is “support.” This does NOT include people who are going to laugh at you or try to tear you down, or tear apart your dreams. That is not a support system, regardless of who those people are (sometimes family members or long-time “friends”).

The most powerful support system includes people who believe in you, people who want the very best for you. In fact these people may actually see more greatness in you than you see in yourself. And that, my friend, is a true support system!

Lots of people want to ride with you in the limo, but what you want is someone who will take the bus with you when the limo breaks down.~Oprah Winfrey

Boundaries

Know, practice and learn from your boundaries. Boundaries are dividing lines that separate you from others, or where you end other people begin. This includes understanding what your limits are, what your needs are and what is unacceptable for you. You can quickly see how your deal-makers and your deal-breakers will help you to define some of your boundaries.

This includes being proactive, or assertive, and asking for what you want.

And, on the other hand, it’s also letting people know what you don’t want or what’s unacceptablefor you. Do this and you’ll create your highest self-respect and self-esteem.

But your boundaries are even more than that. You also have boundaries that you set with yourself. What this means is to set boundaries between different parts of your life, so, for example, finding time for your friends, time to exercise and time just to rest and relax, would all be examples of you setting boundaries with yourself so you can have the most balance possible in your life.

In this day and age there is a big invitation out there to get into a workaholic mode. “Bigger, better, faster, more, now” seems to be the paradigm many people and businesses operate from. Having the inner boundaries with yourself AND having external boundaries, together makes for a winning combination.

“It's a slippery slope, Carrie. Without boundaries younever know what might happen.” ~ From “ Miranda” in Sex and the City
